West Point Public Schools Names Teacher

and Support Staff Member of the Year


WEST POINT, VA — West Point Public Schools (WPPS) has named Alison Gowers as the division’s Teacher of the Year and Dwight Friday as Support Staff Member of the Year.

Gowers has been a member of the division since 1999. She currently serves as a first-grade teacher and English language learner teacher at West Point Elementary School (WPES) and is known for cultivating nurturing and academically rigorous classroom environments. Her dedication to student success is evident in her innovative teaching methods and individualized approach to learning.

Beyond the classroom, Gowers is dedicated to supporting students and families, coordinating essential resources and securing donations for those in need. She also plays a key role in shaping a beneficial school culture as an advocate for positive behavior interventions and supports, reinforcing the division’s commitment to strong relationships.

“Alison Gowers is the kind of teacher who transforms lives,” said Kristy Britt, WPES Principal. “Her dedication to her students, her leadership in her school community, and her commitment to fostering a welcoming and engaging learning environment make her truly exceptional.”

Friday, in his second year as a division security officer, has quickly become an invaluable presence in WPPS. His proactive approach to school safety, coupled with his ability to build meaningful relationships, has strengthened both security and student wellbeing.

Beyond his security role, Friday’s warm and approachable demeanor fosters trust and connection with students and staff, making WPPS a more welcoming environment.

“Mr. Friday has truly been an invaluable part of our school community,” said Chris Walker, WPPS Director of Operations. “His dedication to building positive relationships with both students and staff has created a welcoming and secure environment for everyone. His commitment to safety plays a key role in helping us maintain a space where learning can thrive.”
