TRANSPORTATION SAFETY REMINDERS
Ensuring student safety during transportation is a top priority at West Point Public Schools. We ask all community members and parents to follow these important guidelines to help keep our students safe.
Understand & Comply with Virginia School Bus Laws
The safety of our students depends on everyone following school bus laws. All drivers must stay alert and obey the rules of the road when approaching a school bus. Passing a stopped school bus is not only dangerous—it is illegal and carries severe penalties.
When a school bus has flashing red lights and an extended stop sign:
STOP, regardless of which direction you’re coming from.
Remain stopped until ALL children have safely entered or exited the bus and it begins moving again.
Only proceed without stopping IF the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway with a physical median or barrier. Painted lines and turn lanes do not count as barriers—you must stop in those cases.
Passing a stopped school bus illegally is considered reckless driving in Virginia. Violators face a Class 1 misdemeanor, which can result in fines up to $2,500, license points, and even jail time.
Follow WPPS Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures
To keep our school's transportation system safe and efficient, we ask parents and guardians to follow these procedures during student drop-off and pick-up times:
Use Designated Drop-Off Zones
Always drop off and pick up your child in the designated areas. Do not stop in bus lanes, as this creates safety hazards and disrupts transportation schedules.
Drive with Caution During
Slow down and stay alert when driving through school drop-off and pick-up zones. Watch for students walking, other vehicles, and staff directing traffic. Avoid distractions like using a phone or rushing, as this can increase the risk of accidents.

ANTI-IDLING
West Point Public Schools is committed to reducing air and noise pollution through the anti-idling of division vehicles. While we realize idling cannot always be avoided, there may be exemptions in the event of traffic conditions, vehicles being repaired or serviced, or extremely hot or cold weather situations. This commitment recognizes the importance of educating others on how idling wastes fuel, damages engines, and results in excess greenhouse gas and criteria air pollutant emissions.
GREEN FLEET
West Point Public Schools is committed to actively considering alternative fuel vehicles and higher fuel economy vehicles when making purchasing decisions to add to our school fleet. This commitment recognizes the importance of reducing emissions and improving air quality within West Point.
