West Point Public Schools Announce Teacher,
Support Employee of the Year Awards
West Point, VA — The West Point Public Schools is recognizing the outstanding contributions of Teacher of the Year Michael Cole and Support Employee of the Year Melvin Banks.
Cole, a dedicated math teacher at West Point Middle School, goes beyond traditional instruction by infusing his lessons with a passion for social-emotional wellness. His commitment extends to active participation in committees dedicated to enhancing the overall educational experience for every student.
While Mr. Cole's expertise as a math educator is commendable, his true impact lies in the meaningful connections he establishes with students. Whether guiding motivated learners or supporting those facing challenges, he tailors his approach to provide the necessary guidance and support for success. Mr. Cole's genuine concern and gentle humor create a positive and nurturing learning environment, making him a beloved figure among students.

Banks has been an integral part of the WPPS school community for 26 years. A leader in the maintenance department, he is known for his proactive, meticulous, and efficient approach to his work. He takes pride in ensuring a clean and safe work environment for students, teachers, and staff members.
Beyond his official responsibilities, Mr. Banks serves as a mentor to students and a friend to the entire school community, greeting people by name and expressing genuine care.
