West Point Public Schools Announce Teacher,
Support Employee of the Year Awards

West Point, VA — The West Point Public Schools is recognizing the outstanding contributions of Teacher of the Year Michael Cole and Support Employee of the Year Melvin Banks.

Cole, a dedicated math teacher at West Point Middle School, goes beyond traditional instruction by infusing his lessons with a passion for social-emotional wellness. His commitment extends to active participation in committees dedicated to enhancing the overall educational experience for every student.

While Mr. Cole's expertise as a math educator is commendable, his true impact lies in the meaningful connections he establishes with students. Mr. Cole's genuine concern and gentle humor create a positive and nurturing learning environment, making him a beloved figure among students.

Banks has been an integral part of the WPPS school community for 26 years. A leader in the maintenance department, he is known for his proactive, meticulous, and efficient approach to his work. He takes pride in ensuring a clean and safe work environment for students, teachers, and staff members.

Beyond his official responsibilities, Mr. Banks serves as a mentor to students and a friend to the entire school community, greeting people by name and expressing genuine care.
